The Lightweight - Why I Medicate with Cannabis

Updated: Jun 18, 2022

Why do I use cannabis?

The short answer is pain, anxiety, depression, and as a sleep aid.

The long answer is a little more complicated.

Like most of us, I first tried marijuana as a young adult.

At first, I used it recreationally in social settings as a 'fun thing to do'.

As time went on, I noticed how much it calmed down my mind and body.

I naturally found myself using cannabis in the evenings to wind down after a long day of work.

As someone with anxiety, having my brain sit in neutral and not on a constant loop of unavoidable unpleasantries is a welcomed relief.

Not only that, but I also have chronic sciatic nerve and back pain.

Cannabis helps round off the edges .

I won't lie, sometimes cannabis can worsen my anxiety or make me tired and grumpy.

When used medicinally cannabis can have a range of different effects on the patient, just like any medication. You have to find what works for YOU. Every medical cannabis patient has different needs and uses the plant to address those needs in different ways.

I use a combination of different medication methods to provide different kinds of relief at different times.

I am considered to be "a lightweight" by most cannabis users.

I try to stick with lower THC strains. I prefer 2:1 and 1:1 ratios of CBD and THC.

Higher THC sativas tend to be the worst for my anxiety, so I try to avoid those, or counteract them by using CBD.

My daily regimen usually looks something like this;

I typically take 25mg of CBD (tincture) with breakfast and around lunchtime.

CBD helps to keep me level headed, and greatly improves my stability when I take it everyday.

In the evenings after work I might take a puff or two of a low THC sativa while I cook dinner and work on chores. This helps me stay on my feet after the workday, and remain centered and not overwhelmed. This will often have side-effects like dancing in the kitchen, and singing out loud.

Later in the evening, after the work is done and the kids are in bed, I will choose a higher THC Indica. This is prime for couch-sitting and enjoying a TV show before bed. Indica's usually make me undeniably sleepy after about an hour or so, which is my que for bedtime. (Right now my go-to indica is Killer Cupcake that I got at Cannabis Emporium.)

So WHY do I use cannabis?

When I need to relax, or can't fall asleep.

I can reach for cannabis.

When my mind starts to spiral, or living in my body physically hurts.

Cannabis can help me through it.

When I was once so depressed that I couldn't get up to function, and all I could do was cry.

Cannabis allowed me to get out of bed.

When the just existing feels sharp, cannabis rounds off the edges.

These are the big reasons I choose cannabis. This is how I make cannabis work for me.
